Tina Spratt, Biography

British figurative artist
Original oil and pastel paintings

(b.1976) Somerset, England

Exquisitely illuminating the female form, Tina gracefully reveals glimpses of everyday intimacy. An artist of committed technique and exciting talent, Tina has quickly established herself as one of the leading contemporary realist figurative artists in the country today.

Tina’s success as an artist has thrived from the very beginning. Realising her talent for drawing from an early age, Tina went on to explore life drawing in her A-level art course. Here she discovered her passion for the human form and made the decision to attend art school. By 1998 she had gained a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Illustration from the University of Wolverhampton, and upon graduation, made the decision to pursue a professional career as an artist. Shortly after he debut, she found tremendous success at her first solo exhibition, selling 27 oils and pastels within a week of opening, as well as attracting a storm of media attention from BBC Radio and local press and TV broadcasters.

Fascinated by the skill and draughtsmanship of painting, Tina places great emphasis on the execution of her work.  She tends to paint in many layers to build up the glow of light and depth she requires to create atmosphere and mood, and uses a variety of  techniques, including glazing, which allows her to bring out rich colour and depth. Inspired by the dramatic use of light favoured by Rembrandt and Caravaggio and the intimacy of Andrew Wyeth’s Helga series, Tina’s own style emphasises light to create honest, yet simultaneously ambiguous paintings that evoke an emotional connection.

Tina’s accomplishments throughout her career are many. Her work has been selected for many international exhibitions and competitions, including the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Art Renewal Centre Salon Competition, the Pastel Journal’s ‘Pastel 100’ Competition, the annual BP National Portrait Competition in London and the prestigious Figuritivas 15 competition at The European Museum of Modern Art. She has been selected as both a winner and a finalist for many of these competitions, and in 2016, she was awarded the overall 1st Place Honour Award at ‘Pastel 100’. In 2022 a piece by Tina was sold at the prestigious Sotheby’s auction house in New York, having been specially selected as part of their ‘Contemporary Discoveries’ auction. Her paintings can be found in private and corporate collections around the world, and continues to be recognised and sought-after by professionals and collectors alike.
