Susan and Liz combine forces with a fascinating selection of art works from bronze, watercolours and porcelain to oil on canvas.

In this joint exhibition at The Colomb Art Gallery, London, Susan Thomson and Liz Watts have combined their specialised mediums to create an exhibition with an encompassing scope of works. Both artists exhibit regularly throughout the UK and frequently exhibit together. This is their first joint exhibition in London.

Liz’s roots in veterinary medicine give an interesting anatomical edge to her interpretation of ‘the nature of the beast’. Her chosen range of media allows Liz a fulfilling freedom in the interpretation of the image. She exhibits pieces in clay, porcelain, bronze and papier-mâché, using acrylic, stain, glazes, oil paint and glass in the finishes. Liz often incorporates the written or spoken word into a piece. Susan studied Graphic Design and worked in advertising, then went on to study Botanical art and watercolour painting in the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh.

Susan has exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Botanic Garden and the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society, Gardening Scotland 2006 in Edinburgh, in the Westminster Gallery with the Society of Botanical Artists, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Llewellyn Alexander ‘NOT the Royal Academy’ exhibition in London.

She brings together an eclectic mix of botanical and graphic imaging to create an engaging and appealing collection of work. She is based near Exeter and has her work in private collections of Botanical art in UK and the USA.

Liz initially trained and worked as a veterinary surgeon in both farm and small animal practice for a number of years.

She subsequently moved to and lived for 10 years in France where she studied decorative porcelain painting, moving on to ceramic work and subsequently to study sculpture and ceramics at l'Atelier des Beaux-Arts Henri Matisse, Creil . In France she lived in an isolated house in the middle of an ancient deer forest and spent much time studying, drawing and sculpting the deer,

She returned to the UK in 2002. She has a studio in Bradford on Avon where she creates pieces in ceramic, porcelain and glass, papier-mâché, bronze and Cement/fibreglass casts.

Her work is her interpretation of the world around her. Be it flora, fauna or the life form, her passion is to represent the character and mood of the subject rather than just a physical form. She enjoys catching a sense of movement and loves the challenge of 3D work, always having ‘Itchy fingers’ for new materials. Her work ranges from animal forms, greatly enhanced by her years spent working as a veterinary surgeon, to pieces which find their roots in writing, where the written piece and the art work are developed together.

Susan Thomson
British Artist

Susan trained in Graphic Design and Printing Technical Knowledge before working in advertising. Experienced in black and white illustration, her drawings were included in the Blue Guide, Scotland, and then she went on to study Botanical Drawing and Watercolour at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh.

Susan has exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Botanic Garden and the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society, Gardening Scotland 2006 (achieving a silver medal) in Edinburgh, in the Westminster Gallery with the Society of Botanical Artists, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Llewellyn Alexander ‘NOT the Royal Academy’ in London.

She has had solo exhibitions in the Colours Gallery in Edinburgh and the Rooksmoor Gallery, located in Bath, also home to the Victoria Art Gallery and Holburne Museum where Susan has been included in exhibitions.

A member of the Society of Floral Painters, she annually exhibits with them at Mottisfont Abbey and Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, both near Romsey, and at Compton Acre in Poole.

Susan has had exhibitions more recently at The Great Oak Hall, Westonbirt Arboretum, Tetbury, at the Abbey House Gardens, Malmesbury and for three years consecutively at Dunkeld Cathedral Exhibition, Perthshire.
