Individually crafted by the artist a collagraph's brilliant colouring
and deep textured paper combine to give each individually numbered
print a unique impact and appeal.
The Art of Collagraphy
A collagraph is a print taken from an image which has been built up
in the same way as a collage. In some cases this might be layers of
card and paper which have been skillfully bonded and varnished.
After
painstaking experiment Mark Spain has developed a technique using
hard resin which is then fixed to the surface of a plate. When inked
and printed onto damp paper it creates a variety of textures and heavy
embossing.
The inking and printing process is the same as the standard intaglio
method, which includes etching. Here the ink is rubbed onto a plate
and excess removed with scrim so that the ink from its grooves transfers
to the paper to create the image.
Once the paper has dried further colours are added with relief block
printing and by hand. Finally, gold foil is carefully applied to enhance
the visual effect of the print.
