John
Bampfield
British artist
b.1947 Kidderminster, England
As a prolific British artist, John Bampfield has enjoyed a
lifelong variety of noticeable styles from detailed country
scenes to his memorable impressionistic battlefields.
Bampfield was born 1947 in Kidderminster to mixed Scottish
and English parents. In 1966 he moved to London and later
made the leap to Cornwall in 1968 to join the bourgeoning
artists community where he was attracted by the brilliant
natural light of Penzance and St.Ives.
Fascinated by the fortitude and perpetually crashing surf,
Bampfield found great inspiration in his powerful surroundings.
In the company of the nationally recognised artists Edward
Dyer and Ben Maile, Bampfield’s styles developed and
soon after he supported himself upon the West Country sales
of his oil paintings.
Bampfield himself comments upon his artistic life,
"I have worked very hard for the last twenty years to
the exclusion of most other pleasures in life. That's my life
there, every picture is extremely satisfying to finish and
even harder to part with…there is a part of myself which
I sincerely put into all of my work."
The Colomb Art Gallery currently has one signed original oil
painting available from John Bampfield.
